The Basics Of Candle Magick. A guide.

Consecrating your candles: If you are going to use a candle, before you do, you should focus for a moment or two on your intent. You should charge your candle. Call on deity and draw in energies from the universe. You should feel, in your hand, the candle pulsating as though it’s a heart beat you feel in your hand. Play with this feeling, know it’s right. You may get side-tracked thinking it’s just your grasp. Tighten the grip, loosen it, it doesn’t matter how tightly or how loosely you hold the candle. If you feel a pulsating sensation in your hand with that candle, you are shooting energy into it and you are ready for the next step.

If you are going to use oils on the candle (consecrating) you would rub your oils between the palms of your hands and grasp at the center of the candle with both hands. If you are to draw something to you – you would rub the candle from the middle back towards the body. If you are sending something out, you would rub from the center and away from your body. Turn the candle around and do the same, as mentioned before.

You could say something like: Charge this candle strong and fast, To send the magick I will cast. And may this oil add its power, as the flame burns by the hour

Omens and other things: Thoughts and ideas mainly, people reach their own conclusion based on their own beliefs. If you believe one way, it’s not necessary to change your ways just because someone says so, however here are some common belief’s in case you hadn’t known.

It is not unusual for a candle to flicker of flare – this could be a sign that entities that have been summoned are manifesting themselves and are lending their powers to the magick being made.

A weak flame could be an indication that there is strong opposition and you could try working our spell at another time or day.

You should never use the same candle for two different spells. If it is an ongoing spell its perfectly fine to continue using that same candle, but don’t use a candle that you are working a love spell on and suddenly decide red would be a good color candle to use on a health related spell, simply because you don’t have another red one. Not a good idea.

Always remember that a simple white candle, can be substituted for any other color.

Special papers: many who practice candle magick write out what they wish for on a piece of parchment paper using a quill or a fountain pen to do so. You would then anoint the paper with essential oil that you used to anointed your candle with. You would use the candle you were casting the spell with to light the paper on fire and then place the lit paper in a fireproof dish and allow it to burn out completely. The ashes could be buried along with the stumps of the candle that is left over from the ritual/spell.

If you would like to perform magick on particular days, the following is a guide for which candle colors to use, on particular days.

Sunday – Yellow or Gold

Monday – Silver, grey or white

Tuesday – Red

Wednesday – Purple

Thursday – Blue

Friday – Green

Saturday – Black or purple

If you are to base your magickal workings on Astrological signs, use the following as a guide:

Aries – White or pink

Taurus – Red or yellow

Gemini – Red or blue

Cancer – Green or brown

Leo – Red or green

Virgo – Gold or black

Libra – Black or blue

Scorpio – Brown or black

Sagittarius – Gold or red

Capricorn – Red or brown

Aquarius – Blue or green

Pisces – White or green

Magick candle colors and what they could be used for:

White – The Goddess, Higher Self, Purity, Peace, Virginity (substitutes and other color)

Black – Binding, Shape shifting, Protection, Repels Negativity, Brown, Special Favors, To Influence Friendships.

Silver – The Goddess, Astral Energy, Female Energy, Telepathy, Clairvoyance, Intuition, Dreams

Purple – Third Eye, Psychic Ability, Hidden Knowledge, To Influence People In High Places, Spiritual Power

Blue – Element of Water, Wisdom, Protection, Calm, Good Fortune, Opening Blocked Communication, Spiritual Inspiration

Green – The Element Of Earth, Physical Healing, Monetary Success, Mother Earth, Tree and Plant Magick, Growth, Personal Goals.

Pink – Affection, Romance, Caring, Nurturing, Planetary Good Will.

Red – Element of Fire, Passion, Strength, Fast Action, Career Goals, Lust, Driving Force, Survival, Blood Of The Moon.

Orange – General Success, Property Deals, Legal Matters, Justice, Selling

Copper – Professional Growth, Business Fertility, Career Maneuvers, Passion, Money Goals.

Things you will need:

Candle, lighter, piece of paper, something to burn the paper in, pencil, something to stir with.

Gather up the above items and sit down, get comfortable and release your tensions. Imagine what you want. Meditate on what you desire and imagine having it and what it would be like to have, what you desire. See yourself, having what you want.

Write your wish down on a piece of paper and then light your candle. Release tensions inside you, release anxieties, focus on the flame. Imagine a ball of white light in your chest & surrounding the candles’ flame.

Say the following Affirmation: Behold I connect myself to the powers of the Universe.

Imagine rising up above the Universe and looking down below.

Say the following Affirmation: There is one power in the Universe, and i am a perfect manifestation of that power.

Open your eyes and take that paper and say this affirmation: There is one power in the Universe and I am a perfect manifestation of that power. And as such I will, that even as this paper burns, so too shall this which I have written come to pass. May it  come to me easily and with harm towards none. I will it. I draw it to me. I manifest it. I accept it. I recieve it. I give thanks for it. By my will, so mote it be

Set the paper on fire. Imagine a ball of white light around it. Hold as long as possible and then place it in the burning dish until its gone. Use a stick or knife to move it so that it doesnt burn on just one side. Repeat the last affirmation again on any pieces which do not burn. How quickly your paper burns is an omen as to how long it will take to manifest.

Once you are done, do not dwell on it or think that it will not work, if you feel you are going to obsess over it simply say, I put myself in a position of love and trust, knowing that what i want shall come. Then imagine stepping over a half step to the left. You are done.

This is a very simple, yet effective spell. I did not need to use anything special. I did use my Full Moon Candle however and use my Full Moon Candle when I need to use, or feel I need to use, Full Moon’s Energies. There is a vast array of candles in many colors you can use. I wouldn’t use a votive that has been sitting around the house for days on end, or a taper candle you have hanging on a wall sconse. I would bring out something like I did, or bring out something that hasnt been sitting around your house or home that maybe have gathered negative energies. Your Aura

Our being is more than just our physical body. We have a complex energy system, comprised of our Aura, our Chakras or energy centres & the Meridians or energy channels. The life force that feeds our soul is known as the Universal Life Force or Chi Energy. Our soul requires this complex system to direct & channel this energy to sustain our soul. In later lessons we will look at the Chakras & Meridians in detail but to begin with we learn about the Aura.

What Is The Aura.

It is a well known fact that everything that exists in the known universe is made from atoms. These microscopic particles are themselves made from even smaller particles. It is generally thought that the basis for the smallest particles known to man, is some form of vibrating energy. It can be said that everything in existence is fundamentally just vibrating energy.

The Aura is believed to be electromagnetic radiation caused by the vibrating energy from within the particles that make up the atoms. The Aura around the human body consists of electromagnetic energy in the form of waves. The lower frequencies are related to functions of our body like metabolism and circulation. The higher frequencies are related to our conscious and subconscious minds like our emotions and our personality.

Some scientists including Michael Farraday & Thomas Edison, started to encounter the electro magnetic field that surrounds the body during their experiments. Since then Russian scientist S. D. Kirlan developed kirlian photography. Also called electro-photography, it is the technique of recording the electromagnetic field around a living organism.

In terms of psychic development the Aura is a representation of who we are and what our current state of being is. By looking at the aura we can get a sense of what state of mind a person is in and also an indication of the state of their health. Most importantly the Aura can tell us about the level of a person’s spiritual growth. The greater a persons spiritual connection becomes, the higher the frequency at which their Aura vibrates.

Although everything has an Aura from inanimate objects through to plants, animals and human beings, the Auras of living beings are different from that of inanimate objects. The Auras of living beings will change overtime depending on their spiritual and physical state. Our Aura’s change depending on whether we are in good health or not. It will also change as we experience different emotions and as we learn and grow spiritually. If a person or place has a negative effect on our Aura by draining its energy, it can give that person a feeling of wanting to move away, Often described as a gut feeling or instinct that they just don’t like that person or place. This can be caused by a lack of equilibrium between two Auras, if one Aura is more dominant than the other it can over power that Aura. Or if one Aura is damaged and needs to be healed it can drain energy from a healthier Aura. The message is then passed from the Aura into the nervous system of the physical body, giving us an uncomfortable feeling. The Aura of an inanimate object will remain generally the same. The exception to this is when the emotional state of a person affects their perception of what the Aura looks like.

The Subtle Bodies

The human Aura consists of several layers called energy bodies or subtle bodies of which there are at least Four, but it is claimed there could be as many as Severn.

The First layer closest to the physical body is the Ethereal Body. This has the lowest frequency.

Next is the Astral Body. This has a slightly higher frequency and is outside of the Ethereal Body.

Outside of the Astral Body is the Mental Body which has higher frequency again.

Then there is the Spiritual Body & possibly more bodies with even higher frequencies.

How To See The Aura.

The Aura extends just outside the solid edge of an object or person but it cannot be seen simply by looking directly at the edge. The Eyes are designed to see light which is electromagnetic energy. The range of frequencies that our eyes are sensitive to are known as the colours that we are all familiar with. The Aura consists of frequencies that are outside of this range, however it is believed that our peripheral vision can pick up some frequencies that are lost when we look directly at something. This means that to see a persons Aura we need to concentrate our sight just inside the edge of that person allowing us to see their Aura in our peripheral vision.

When you first start to see Aura’s there is a temptation to move our eyes to directly look at it, however when we do this we can no longer see it so it is important not to give in to this temptation and instead keep the edge of a person and therefore their Aura just outside the centre of our vision.

Candle Making

Making your own candles are easy and fairly inexpensive. You can always go to the local store and buy some candles, but you wouldn’t believe how much more effective your candles are when you make them yourself and when I make candles for people I always make them from scratch.

You Will Need:

1. Paraffin wax (the kind of wax you would find at the grocery store in the canning section).

2. Crayons

3. Candle wicks

4. popsicle sticks or clothes pins

5. old jars, old candle votive glasses etc.

6. double burner (or large pot for boiling water and another pot that will sit inside of the larger pot)

7. baking soda (for fires just incase! Better yet have a fire extinguisher)

Get water to boiling and keep it hot, sit the other pot inside the larger pot that has the boiling water in it. Put your parriffin wax block into the smaller pot and let it melt. The paraffin wax that you buy at the market wont make alot so you should really buy a few of those. For now we will focus on one candle and getting it done. Once you do that one candle its a piece of cake afterwards and you’ll be able to judge later on, just how much wax you would need for larger projects.

I usually buy a few boxes of cheaper crayons and use those for color. Choose the color you want your candle to be and put the crayon in there and melt it. Your wax will turn out to be the color of the crayon. Using more than one crayon will make your color alot more vibrant.

Once you melt your wax your ready to fill your votive with wax. Position the wick so its in the center of your votive. If the container is small enough I would use a clothes pin to center it and leave it until its dry. The drying process takes a while so just sit your candle aside until its finished drying.

There you have it. Simple and cheap method of creating your own candles. It goes without saying that melted wax is hot so be sure to keep potholders handy. Never put out a wax fire with water, but use a fire extinguisher or baking soda.

The next how to will be how to make it into a spell candle! :) Don’t worry you can use these candles you made for that, but theres also another step that could be done to make it a magic candle before you even pour your wax into the votive.

These magick herbs you may already have in your kitchen and its why I chose these select few, there are many magickal banishing herbs for banishing spells out there, but heres a nice list to get you started, that include : allspice, almond, basil, catnip, cinnamon, clove, dill, garlic, lavender, nutmeg, onion, rosemary, sage and thyme.
